For 2018 we decided to start a series of monthly features of our artists chosen at random. The idea being to get you, the art collector, to get to know a little more about these creatives we call our Unsung Art family. How they tick. What inspires them to create. Maybe even other quirky things you might like to know about someone you like the work of. It might give you a deeper understanding and appreciation for what you see and maybe already purchased.
Our first ever monthly feature will go to Katherine Kelly – born and currently residing in Cape Town, she was raised in KZN which probably explains her easy going attitude and love for the beach.
What started you in your career of art? What sparked your interest in creating art?
I’ve been making in art in some form or another for as long as I can remember. There is however, a particular childhood memory that stands out for me.
I was sitting in our garden in KwaZulu-Natal, determined to draw a rose. I stared and stared, painstakingly observing in a way that only children can until I finally put pencil to paper. When I was done, I remember looking at my drawing and feeling immense satisfaction. From then I was hooked on drawing, it felt like magic. From that time on I drew, painted, experimented, explored and it has been an ongoing journey ever since.
Where are you based? Why there?
I’m currently based in Scarborough, though I’ve been jumping around the Southern Peninsula for the last ten years or so. I love the laid-back pace of life out here. The people are relaxed, there are mountains and endless beaches to choose from.
What inspires you to create art?
I get a lot of my inspiration from nature – patterns in the sand, the movement of water, the endless birds and creatures one can spot around these parts. My other source of inspiration is my group of art students (I teach high school art). Seeing the way teenagers respond to themes and explore mediums can be really exciting!
How would you describe your art?
I would say my art is whimsical, playful and colourful. I work largely with watercolour, pen and ink. I love exploring how line can be used to create curves and patterns, as well as creating sort of dreamy images.
Who are some of your favorite artists (local and/or international)?
My favourite artists are plentiful! I follow a lot of illustrators on Instagram: Mara Penny, Sandra Dieckman, Lorraine Loots, Faith47, Helen Dardik…to name a few!
Any plans/changes/exhibitions/projects/anything exciting on the horizon for the near future?
I’m hoping to hold some small exhibitions in 2018 – probably in the Deep South. I’m also looking at illustrating a series of children’s books that a friend has co-written with her adorable four-year-old-son. I’d also really like to focus on getting a website up and running and getting more social media savvy, I find self-promotion incredibly daunting!
Finally, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time or to relax, between working and creating art?
I imagine it goes without saying that most of my ‘spare’ time is taken up with painting and drawing. But I also spend a lot of my free time walking and running on Noordhoek or Scarborough beach. My rescue pup, Rosie, has LOTS of energy so we go on all sorts of adventures. I love lying on my bed with a good book, listening to seagulls and the sound of the sea. I like planting things, watching them grow; I’m extremely in love with pretty much all flowers. Other than that, a cold beer in the sunshine is also a firm favorite when it comes to whiling away an afternoon.
Katherine has been part of the Unsung Art family for a little over two years now and it has been very nice to have her on board. She has recently restocked us with some dreamy new prints of some of her illustrations all of which can be found on our online store (by clicking here).
