My preferred choice of medium is charcoal on canvas. I love the simplicity and pure drama of black and white. Charcoal provides me with an element of surprise as it is volatile and forgiving too. It allows me to work loosely that I may flirt with lines and chance. The conclusion is often like the unfolding of a seemingly inherent plan. There is no real initial intention other than the animal I start off with in my paintings as I work from doodle and play. The outcome is very often like an invocation; an interpretation of how I perceive people. I liken certain animals to people’s idiosyncrasies, predominantly birds and hounds. Representing archetypal character or the interpretation of a story, event or emotion.
