How to take care of you encaustic painting:
The word Encaustic comes from the Greek word Enkaustikos meaning to heat or burn in.Encaustic paints (also known as hot wax painting) are perhaps the most durable form of painting, evidenced by the Fayum mummy portraits in Egypt, that have survived over 2000 years without showing severe damage. Wax has several inherent qualities that allow it to withstand the test of time: it is a natural adhesive; it is moisture resistant, mildew and fungus resistant, and unappetizing to insects. Encausticpaints do not have to be varnished or protected by glass. When transporting the artwork, protect the surface and edges as encaustic work may scratch or chip when handled roughly. As with all art forms, the artwork must not be exposed to direct sunlight, extreme colds and do not leave in a sealed vehicle. They do best between 5°and 50° Celsius. The beeswax has damar resin in it’s formula which cures and hardens the wax over time, making it less vulnerable to damage. If a slight haze occur the artwork may be gently buffed with a microfibre cloth.Medium: Encaustic on watercolour paper, mounted on matted black board.
