Where are you based? Why there?
I am currently based in Cape Town . I really enjoy it here and there is so much you can see and do around this magical city. The scenery, the people and the energy here is amazing! I can literally just go outside and draw inspiration and ideas from what I see. Also , Cape Town is very central to a lot of things and I am also closer to my family here.
What started you in your career of art? What sparked your interest in creating art?
I have been drawing from a very young age – I would say about 3 or 4 years old. My family, especially my Mom and Dad could see that I enjoyed drawing and they always encouraged and supported me. I loved creating things from old materials and drawing things that I saw everyday. I think what inspired me also was when I saw what amazing things people could do with pen or pencil as well as creating things with objects that people would normally throw away.
How would you describe your art?
I would describe my art as ‘creations possessing a sense of freedom or peace’. I am inspired by the emotions carried through art and how it makes people feel, so I incorporate those emotions within my art as I would like people to have an emotional connection to my work and have my artwork touch them on some deeper level.
What inspires you to create art?
There are many things that inspire me to create art, but I would have to say the biggest one of them all would be things that come from nature. I am always amazed at the shapes and colours that are produced and what creativity I can draw from it.
Do you have any formal training/education relating to art or are you self-taught?
I would say both. The reason being was before I went to art school, I was already busy practicing art on my own from art books that I had. My skills improved when I went to art school because I learned so much! It taught me about all the different styles of art that exist as well as giving me the chance to work with different mediums as I primarily started drawing and doing art with just a pencil.
What is your favourite medium/art form to create and view/collect?
My favourite mediums to work with are charcoal and pencil, but I do enjoy using some water colour as well.
What has been your best memory/experience related to your art?
I would say my best memory related to art would be when I sold my first painting. The sense of pride I felt in myself is something that I would never forget! That was one of the moments that pushed me and created a desire in me to be one of the best at what I do.
What other interests/hobbies do you have?
I’m into music- and sound production. I enjoy remixing songs, playing around with new sounds and learning how to play new instruments. I would say that’s also another passion of mine.
What do you do in your spare time to relax and unwind?
I enjoy spending my time with friends and family and hanging out with them – family is very important to me so I spend as much time with them as possible.
I also enjoy reading books and drawing. Art is also another way of relaxing for me believe it or not! When I’m busy creating something, I just forget about all my frustrations and just enjoy being in the moment doing what I’m doing.
