The new season has arrived and we are excited to bring you our new monthly feature post from amazing artist and new mommy, Leigh Tuckniss!
What started you in your career of art? What sparked your interest in creating art?
Art has always been my first love! I knew I wanted to be an artist from when I was very little and I was lucky enough to have parents that supported me with this passion!
Where are you based? Why there?
I am based in Muizenberg in Cape Town, South Africa. I love that Muizenberg is an old surf town, it’s so relaxed and brimming with creatives living their best lives. It’s a great place to live if you are a creative.
What inspires you to create art?
Finding small beauties in the mundane everyday. Finding moments of beauty in the simplest of actions, or an animal, pose, object and sound. The mysterious beauty in all that is part of our day which just dissolves into the busyness of it all. I almost want to freeze moments and by painting them I guess I am able to do that.
How would you describe your art?
I feel the word that best describes my work is “fluid”. Because of the way I use ink, the subject matter has a sense of movement to it. More than often people think my choice of material is watercolour, but actually I use India Ink. I just use it in such a way that the final result looks very similar to watercolour. In terms of subject matter, I have never been able to find one particular theme, as so much speaks to me, but I guess the concept of ‘mystery’ is something I like to work with.
What has been your best memory/experience related to your art?
My best memory relating to art was probably when I had my first ever solo show. It was such an incredibly feeling, I felt so proud of myself.
What is your favorite medium/art form both to create and view/collect?
My favorite medium to create with is ink for sure! But my favorite medium/art to view is abstract oils! I just love oil paint, especially the smell of it!
Do you have any formal training/education relating to art or are you self-taught?
Yes I studied at Michaelis School of Fine, it was a wild journey of learning and unlearning.
Who are some of your favorite artists (local and/or international)?
Ahh so many but to name a few local power house womxn:
Any plans/changes/exhibitions/projects/anything exciting on the horizon for the near future?
I do have some plans, but having a baby in the mix does make this a little more complicated. This period of becoming a mother has inspired so much and so there will absolutely be some new work coming out soon.
What other interests/hobbies do you have?
Besides being a full time mama-bear, I love being outdoors in nature whether it be walking or chilling. Soaking up the beauty of nature is my absolute joy, and watching my child enjoy it to is so beautiful!
What do you do in your spare time to relax and unwind?
Well now that I am a parent, there is very little relax time. But while she is napping I love doing something creative.
