– Dean Jensen –
Dean is best known for his design work in the music and advertising industries. Having studied Fine Art as well as Design in the early nineties, he moved full-time into the advertising industry in SA as an illustrator, designer and later Creative Director. Along the way, he was a finalist int he Guilloises Freedom of Expression art competition, regional finalist in the Absa Atelier Awards, as well as winning the NSA young artist of the year: New Media in the early 2000’s. He has successfully exhibited solo as well as in successful collaboration exhibitions both in Durban and Johannesburg galleries. A multi-award winning designer, Dean has recently pursued his first love of art and printmaking again, in particular linocat and black ink artworks.
Dean is a lover of light and negative space. All woodcust and lino work he creates is finally pulled not on a roller press, but on a working vintage 19th century (1828) 100kg cast iron bookpress, which makes very unique finish levels on the ink and paper quite unlike traditional hand pulled or roller press lino work. The pressure is applied vertically rather than like a wave on a rolling press, so the ink is forced straight down. This means little tine inconsistencies in the ink, form part of the character of all the work as every edition that is pulled looks just a tiny bit different.
