A small change in price can change the way we look at an object.
In Combs — 25 each, Justin Muller, known as Jay Bubbles, uses found combs, acrylic paint and a handwritten price label to create a work that sits between everyday observation and conceptual play. The colourful objects are arranged against a deep blue background, their familiar forms gaining a new presence through repetition and composition.
The handwritten amount is more than a descriptive detail. Within the painting, it introduces the visual language of buying and selling, encouraging viewers to compare, categorise and question what they see. The difference between a modest everyday price and the price of an artwork opens up an intriguing space for reflection.
Rather than offering a fixed interpretation, the work leaves the viewer to complete the thought. What are we valuing, and how do we decide?
Combining acrylic on canvas with found art, Combs — 25 each brings wit, colour and conceptual intrigue to a contemporary art collection.
