What determines the value of an everyday object?
In Afro Combs — 15 each, Justin Muller, known as Jay Bubbles, brings found objects and painting together in a composition that turns familiar grooming tools into the subject of closer attention. Against a richly coloured blue ground, the combs are arranged in a deliberate rhythm, their vivid colours contrasting with the handwritten price label.
The inclusion of the original-looking commercial notation introduces a playful tension between the everyday transaction and the art object. The viewer is invited to look, compare and consider value — an apparently simple act that becomes more intriguing within the context of a painting.
Combining acrylic on canvas with found art, this work brings visual immediacy and conceptual curiosity into the same frame.
A distinctive addition to a contemporary art collection, Afro Combs — 15 each rewards both the quick glance and the second look.
